France PM Sebastien Lecornu quits after a record-low 27 days, shortest French premiership on record

Paris, France — October 6, 2025 — French new Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu has officially resigned 27 days after assuming office, according to AFP reports, in a remarkable political upheaval. President Emmanuel Macron has accepted his resignation.

France PM Sebastien Lecornu quits after a record-low 27 days, shortest French premiership on record, due to street protests and backlash against President Emmanuel Macron.

He succeeded then-Prime Minister François Bayrou, who had resigned earlier the same week, on September 9. Lecornu, with less than a month as prime minister, had the shortest time of any French prime minister, according to Le Figaro.

Political observers believe Lecornu lost out due to fierce opposition at the National Assembly, which did not have a parliamentary majority for his government. This places him as the fifth prime minister within less than two years who stepped down, reflecting increasing instability at Macron's administration.

France recently witnessed mass protests because of the proposed French government budget, which involves extensive reductions in public expenditure. The protests have created mass concern regarding citizen outcry and increasing demands for the resignation of President Macron as well.

As French political instability and civil unrest increase, Lecornu's unexpected resignation adds yet another stroke of unpredictability to French leadership.
