Unicef Sounds Alarm Over Worst Situation for Newborns and Mothers in Gaza |
Things in Gaza get worse every day, and Unicef has sounded a deep concern over the dire risk facing newborns and mothers.
With hospitals running at more than full capacity and essential medical supplies running low, the health crisis is spiraling out of control.
Bursting Hospitals in Khan Younis
Unicef delegate James Elder, speaking to Reuters, described intimidating scenes at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, southern Gaza.
Its halls are now filled with women who have given birth and are attempting to receive proper postnatal care.
Nasser Hospital has become the last refuge for thousands who fled northern Gaza to the south to escape and receive medical care.
But supplies are woefully low.
A developing emergency for mothers and infants
Unicef raises the alarm that the current situation threatens the mothers and the new-borns with immediate danger.
Lack of clean water, electricity, suitable medical facilities, and trained personnel makes safe delivery nearly impossible.
"The situation has never been worse," Elder underscored.
Without immediate humanitarian aid, the chances of survival for millions of infants and their mothers are under serious threat.
Humanitarian Call to Action
The Gaza situation puts the international aid in the spotlight.
Relief groups call on the international community to intervene with resources, aid money, and medicine in an effort to prevent further casualties.
